What the LAC girls get up to on their weekends!
by Linda MacEwen

some pics from recent girl's training runs to prove that its not all blackpudding and egg rolls despite the rumours. The runs were Devils Ridge in Glen Nevis and Cairngorm and Ben Mcdui. Some other mini adventures have involved Curved Ridge on the Buachaille, the Aonach Eagach Ridge and the Devils Staircase out and back.

The training runs are usually a Saturday or Sunday when there in not a race on and I just send out a text telling everyone where and when to meet so if anyone wants to join the Boot Camp Training list they just have to give me their mobile number. We aim to get out for about 2 to 5 hours and yes a run is usually followed by Coffee and food. Contact Linda MacEwen for more info. Who's the babe in the LAC vest with the georgous pins?

Slip Slidin’ Away on Eagle Crag
After a week of serious watering, Eagle Crag Hill Race was doing a good impression of Glastonbury with most of the 26 runners taking a slip or a slide at some point.
The mist did its best to obscure a very well marked route and times were down due to conditions.
Grinning like a Cheshire cat, Tom Smith had his first win, with Colin Donnelly second and Russell Anderson (en route to a family holiday in Skye) taking third place.
Young Sarah MacKenzie took an impressive five and a half minutes off her previous best and finished first lady, comfortably ahead of Amanda Blackhall and third placed Sara Byrne. Lynn MacLennan was first vet 40 lady, in a PB by 11 minutes.
Davy Duncan was first vet 50 man and Kate Gray, a week after the Highland Cross, first vet 50 lady. On his 64th birthday, Ernie Orr was first vet 60.

Thanks go to Ken Rumgay, route marker extraordinaire, and marshals Tark Gunn, John Hepburn and the O’Neill family.

Cheers, Clare

Junior Hill Race and BBQ On Tuesday evening the Juniors of the club had their annual hillrace and BBQ. We were unbelievably very lucky with the weather as the rain stopped just before the race and just for enough time to have a BBQ midge free. Thanks again to Colin Denny for providing all the lovely burgers and to Wendy for cooking them. It was good that the seniors ran over on their training run to provide extra people on the hill and encourage the juniors. Despite wet grass under foot Katie MacLennan(Under14) equalled the Girls Trig Point course record of 13minutes27seconds  set back in 2004 by Sarah Blake( Edinburgh Under 18) ,with Calum Fraser also setting a new Under 12 record to the top of the steep climb and Francis Oliver set a new Under 10 record up to the Twin Trees..

Whats all the buzzz... about Hornet juice is the buzz word but whats all the fuss about! Here's what I found on the web. It's a scientific sports drink that is based on the same nutrient system used by hornets, who can fly 60 miles in a single day. The secret? Metabolism of fat. Hornet juice utilizes reserves of body fat for energy.

From the new York times, oct 2000.
"the marathon winner at the Sydney olympics revealed the secret of her success - she drank the stomach juices of giant, killer hornets that fly 100km a day. Naoko takahashi, from Japan, consumed the hornet juice during training and the race itself after scientists discovered that it had astonishing powers to boost human Stamina. "

How does hornet juice work?
It works by activating the burning of fat for energy right from the start of ativity.
Your body has two sources of energy - glycogen and fat. Glycogen is easily burned in a short period of time and serves as a source of stamina in events that require a burst of energy. The disadvantage with this is the limited amount of glycogen your body has. Your stores of glycogen are not sufficient to provide energy during exercise of long
Duration. Conversely, fat is stored in abundance by the body, although it is difficult to convert into energy, requiring large amounts of oxygen to do so. Hornet juice works by quickly converting your body fat into a supply of energy during exercise.

What makes hornet juice different?
Most sports nutrition products function as a fuel. They replace energy that has been lost through exercise by replenishing the bodys glycogen stores. This is principally done by eating/drinking carbs. Hornet juice works differently, not as a fuel, but acting as a trigger for the oxidation of fat. Hornet juice does not replace your exiting sports nutrition program, but works to complement it. Want to know more click here

Mitchell does it again
Spring sunshine helped 58 runners to some fine times in the final race of Lochaber Athletic Club’s Winter League, the Lairig Mor. Over the fourteen mile course along the West Highland Way, Craig Mitchell was out on his own and won the race comfortably for a second year in 1:29:01. Cosmic’s Jason Williamson was second in 1:32:20, with Ross Bannerman of Highland Hill Runners third in 1:33:49. Niall MacBeath put in a personal best performance of 1:34:54 to finish first male veteran. Dawn Scott took the ladies’ race in fine style, finishing 11th overall in 1:39:26, over four minutes ahead of second lady Nicola Meekin, at 1:43:55. Third lady was Amanda Blackhall in 1:51:42. Linda MacEwan was first female veteran in 1:57:27. Perhaps the run of the day was from Jean and Gus Bowman from Fife who completed the race then turned round and ran back again!
Thanks to the Mamore Lodge for parking, the finish team of Dugie & Teresa and sweeper Colin Ross.

In the final count, Craig Mitchell was first senior man with Tom Smith second and Jon Gay third. Most improved male, Ali Kennedy, was first male veteran over 40. Second was Ronnie Turner and third Graham MacNab. Male veteran 50 winners were Jim Treasurer first, Colin McAndrew second and Andrew Finnimore third. Ernie Orr held on to his male veteran 60 shield for another year, closely followed by Dave Ford. Best male newcomer was Niall Clark.
Nicola Meekin was first lady overall, with Amanda Blackhall second and best female newcomer Sarah MacKenzie third. Nix Forster was first lady over 40, followed by Linda MacEwan then Emma Pearce. Bunting's Bump and Druim Fada Chase, Sun 25 November 2007.
Nobody turned up for the over 13's Bunting's Bump race, so nothing to report.
In contrast a record turnout of 58 turned up for the Druim Fada race. Due to heavy overnight rain Roger Boswell the organiser moved the start at short notice so as to avoid crossing a potentially dangerous river, and this added about a mile to the route, plus an extra 150 feet of climb.
A further half a mile and 100 feet of climb was added by replacing the notorious boggy fire break with the Bunting's Bump loop at the end of the race. The combined effect of the two route changes meant this year's race was 8 miles with 1500 feet of climb, a tough race, and not what most entrants bargained for.
From the start, Ruaridh Watt and Colin Donnelly pulled clearof the field and forged a big lead as they hurtled eastwards on the high level landrover track. 1000 feet up with magnificent views all around. Unfortuneately Roger forgot to warn the runners that the original flags were still in position. Inevitably the two leaders of the race, who were both newcomers, spotted marker flags leading off the hill down towards Achdalieu where the original race starts. Naturally they followed the flags. Ruaridh started pulling ahead of Colin and plunged on and on into oblivion. Colin got suspicious and spotted runners on the track ignoring the markers. He turned around and regained the track, well behind the new leaders, and eventually finished 7th. Ruaridh found his own route to the finish and came 43rd, having run a very long way. Craig Mitchell was surprised to learn he had won the race as he crossed the line in splendid isolation in 58:49, the only runner to break the hour. Nicola Meekin from Oban managed to hold off Dawn Scott by 30 seconds to win the women's race in an excellenet time of 1:05:12. Bravest competitor was 17 year old Gavin Rankin who spurned the chance of winning the Bunting's Bump racein order to explore uncharted territory by running his first hill race, finishing last in 2:00:49.

LAC mens team have tied for second place  in an exciting 2007 Scottish hill running championship .

Scottish Hill Runners has organised a Senior Championship since 1983. It represents a true test of all round ability on the hills, requiring contenders to finish at least four of six selected A category races, and show their worth across the range of Long, Medium and Short hill races.
The open team award for the championship goes to the best four races out of six . Four team members need to complete any race to gain team points for that race. The travelling this year was onerous  with races as far apart as Fife, Dumfries &Galloway and Grampian. Carnethy hill racers of Edinburgh won the championship this year with a consistent team performance. Lochaber tied for 2nd with Westies of Glasgow. The following LAC team members were in the first four team counter places.

Stuc a chroin (strathyre) 14miles 5000feet. 5th May. Colin Donnelly , John Hepburn ,Tom Smith , Paul Maclean 2nd team
Angus Munro (Glen clova) 15miles 5500feet. 14th July. Colin Donnelly, Neil Arnott Lomonds of fife  11miles 3400feet . 19th August . Colin Donnelly, David Rogers, Tom Smith, Neil Arnott 2nd team
Devils beef tub (Moffat) 2miles 750feet. 8th September. Colin Donnelly, Tom Smith
Merrick (Newton Stewart). 8.5miles 3300feet. 15TH September. Colin Donnelly, Tom Smith, Neil Arnott, Drew Broadley 3rd team
Morven (Dinnet near aboyne). 5.2miles 2100 feet. 22nd September. Findlay wild, Craig Mitchell ,Neil Arnott, ken Whyte 2nd team.

In the Morven race Lochaber AC came in front of complete teams from Cosmic hill bashers, Deeside runners, Fife AC , Carnegie Harriers and Westies. V50 Ken Whyte’s trademark strong ascent  clinching the crucial high placed 4th counter.
Finlay Wild , came in third place at Morven against top class opposition which enabled Colin Donnelly to retain third place overall in the individual mens Scottish championship as internationalist Simon Peachey of Carnethy had to settle for fourth place at Morven. Meanwhile, Colin ,who we should all remember, has previously won the Ben Nevis race in an outstanding 1 hour and twenty five minutes(no one has gone faster since this time was achieved in 1986) was busy winning the Two Breweries race in the Borders, in the
Lochaber vest, by a clear 9 minutes.

THE REINDEER MAN WINNETH….
Lochaber Athletic Club staged their annual Triple Hirple last weekend, this year supported by R.A. Clement Associates. Over eighty athletes/eejits from as far afield as Czechoslovakia and Tillicoultry competed in the Melantee, Half Nevis and Cow Hill. This year, 35 completed all three –17 men and 18 ladies – for the coveted coffee mug.
Smithy did it again, winning the overall title and a rather splendid silver cup. Dawn Scott was an equally popular overall ladies’ winner.
With conditions on Melantee like an uphill version of T in the Park, the 46 runners had to work hard through deep bog and brave a slippery descent. Alan Smith, Deeside, set out his stall finishing looking at ease in 33:14, with Des Crowe, Shettleston, second in 34:28. Lochaber’s Graham Brooks, ran an incredible race to finish third (and first male vet 50) in 36:10.
First lady was local Dawn Scott (39:27) with Deeside’s Ruth MacKenzie second (40:14) and Lyndsey Shaw third (43:23). Among notable locals were Tarquin Gunn, Ali Kennedy, the ever improving Ian Adams and Niall Clark who finished well despite doing a Glastonbury dive on his way back through the last bog.

Heavy showers didn’t deter 66 hardy souls from taking on the Half Nevis race the next day. In his first race as an over 40, Lochaber’s Davy Rodgers came home first in 57:22, comfortably ahead of Alan Smith at 59:38 and third place Paul MacLean at 1:02:27. Dawn Scott continued a strong weekend finishing first lady again in 1:11:00, with Ruth MacKenzie second again in 1:14:10 and Fife AC’s Sarah Legge just ten seconds behind. A kilted Graham Brooks was first over 50 home, winning the Eddie Campbell cup.
50 gluttons for punishment arrived at a sunny Parade on Monday evening for the Cow Hill race. Despite exaggerated complaints of sore and tired legs, a fast and competitive race was run. Colin Donnelly was first in 18:30. Second back was Davy Rodgers at 19:01, with Ruari Watt making a Lochaber 1, 2, 3 in 19:23. Dawn Scott made it three out of three, winning in 22:45, with Oban’s Nicola Meekin second in 24:34 and Lyndsey Shaw third in 25:31.
Manny Gorman tried to time his cycle from Kingussie to just miss the start, but helpful organisers delayed the start and helped him change his shoes.
Joan and Colin Wilson chalked up races 16, 17 & 18 towards their 25 for their 25th.
The club are grateful to everyone who helped make this an enjoyable weekend of top class racing and good craic. Thanks go to all marshals and helpers, particularly timing official Dugie MacDonald.

Great night of hill racing at the Trig Point The junior section of Lochaber Athletic Club competed in their annual hill race at Trig Point Hill on Tuesday evening. Good weather made for fast times for the 35 competitors and an enjoyable BBQ was had afterwards. Under 16 boys Koni Johnson(12min3seconds) and Ryan Denny (12min 8 seconds) ran a great race, both breaking the previous age group record for the 2.1km race with 150m of climb. Running over a minute faster than last year were Under 14 boys Michael Kennedy( 13.11), Stephen MacPhee(13.32) and Under 10 runners Finn Munro and Eilidh Moynihan. Whilst Under 12 Katie MacLennnan and Under 10 Innis Blackhall both set new course records for their age groups.
The next local junior races are the Offbeat Bikes Aonach Mor Uphill (ages 14 upwards) 7pm Friday 13th July 7pm and the Lochaber Highland Games Junior Events Saturday 28th July
Well done to everyone who took part. We were very lucky again this year with the weather. Fantastic race between Koni and Ryan. A few course records were broken and nearly everyone ran faster than last year; Finn Munro, Eilidh Moynihan, Michael Kennedy and Stephen MacPhee were all over a minute quicker.

Eagle Crag Hill Race RECORDS AND RUNNERS TUMBLE AT EAGLE CRAG
A respectable turnout of 31 runners tackled the tough 5.4 mile, 2500 feet Eagle Crag hill race. A week of watering made for a muddy, boggy run, with the last steep descent a particularly slippery slope. Clearing pea soup mist and a well marked route helped secure some fast times.
Brian Marshall finished comfortably within his own record, winning in 58:28. Dawn Scott also broke her record by almost a minute, finishing in 1:13:29.
Second and third men were Colin Donnelly and Alan Smith in 1:01:02 and 1:03:08. Behind Dawn were Amanda Blackhall in 1:21:53 and Sarah Legge in 1:24:55.
Among strong local performances were new LAC recruit Peter Ward, Graham Brooks (first male vet 50) and Ali Kennedy. Ernie Orr posted his fastest time yet in this race and Ian Adams took an astonishing 17 minutes off his last year’s time.
Thanks go to marshals and helpers Bill, Christine, the O’Neills and Ken. Many thanks to Ian MacColl for permission. results here

.

Craig wins at Scolty. Craig Mitchell LAC took a fine win at Scolty Hill race. It's now home territory for Craig, who beat some fine runners. I'm sure he'll have had a few well deserved beers after that one. Gillian Sangster LAC was 48th.

LAC runners in action. Peter Ward, one of our newer members has been pretty active, 26th on Jura, 4:11:45, mark Shaw was 67th. Peter was also running in another long event in the Lakes finishing 62nd out of a field of 349 finishers at Duddon Valley.

Goatfell Hill race
a great turn out from LAC runners for this years race. The men were always going to struggle to retain the team title with this years race incorporating the SAL championship. First across the line in the mens race was Jethro Lennox of Shetelston, slightly blooded and bruised after a fall on the descent. In the ladies Elke Schmidt, Bella, took the Ladies championship, our own Dawn Scott was second and Linda MacEwan was 6th lady overall and took the 1st lady 40 in the race and is now the SAL female 40 hill running champion. In the team event the ladies took bronze. Dawn, Linda, Nancy Kennedy and Clare Rumgay. Tom Smith was the first man home for LAC in 16th place followed by Paul MacLean, 18th and Peter Ward 19th. Neil Arnott was 23rd, Ken Rumgay 48th, Graham MacNab 53rd and Ernie Orr 82nd. After such a long journey to this race, this was an impressive result. Full results can be found here

LAIRIG MOR FIRST FOR MITCHELL
Despite truly testing conditions, 76 runners competed in the final race of Lochaber Athletic Club’s popular Winter League. Battling a strong headwind and driving rain for much of the 14 mile course along the West Highland Way, times were down on previous years, but impressive nonetheless.
First man home, looking surprisingly fresh, was Craig Mitchell in 1:30:37, followed by Colin Donnelly in 1:32:12 and Clydesdale Harrier John Kennedy in 1:33:46. Amanda Blackhall was in a class of her own as first lady, finishing in 1:53:42, over four minutes ahead of Westerlands’ Ellen Homewood, in at 1:58:05. Ellen’s teammate, Catriona Miller was third in 1:58:42.
Despite the conditions, many runners achieved real personal triumphs, whether posting personal best times, completing the race for the first time or finishing smiling without vowing to give up running.
Thanks go to Paul Bush, of the Mamore Lodge for start line hospitality and to finish line team of Emma, Dugie and Ken. Special thanks to hero of the day, safety sweeper Stuart Gray.

In a nailbiting conclusion to the league, Paul MacLean and Tom Smith were on equal points and took the senior men championship down to the last race. Paul prevailed in the end, with Tom second and Neil Arnott third. Colin Donnelly was first male veteran over 40, with John Hepburn second and Graham MacNab third. Ken Whyte was again first overall male veteran over 50, with John Dougan second and Ray Murdoch third. Ernie Orr was again best over 60. Best male newcomer was Ali Kennedy. Most improved male was Ian Adams.
Amanda Blackhall finished a great season as first lady. Nicola Forster was second and Biff Gow third. Linda MacEwan retained her lady veteran over 40 title for another year, with Teresa Mackay second. Aileen Duncan was third, beating Jackie Hepburn into fourth position by just one point, gained in the Lairig Mor. New granny, Aileen Kitson was first lady over 50. Best lady improver Elma Murdoch was second and Jenny Ford third. Best lady newcomer was Morag Arnott.
The prizegiving was followed by a disco, with DJ Connor Gillies.
Many thanks to league sponsors, Off Beat Bikes.

Vitrified Fort 2007 what a great turn out for for this one, did we all need the points! Senior results here

Carnethy good to see so many LAC runners out for this one, two mini buses, must be a record, 30 LAC starters! Turned out a great weekend, sunny, dare I say it verging on warm weather for the race. The full results can be found here LAC's first team, 7th team overall was, Tom Smith, John Hepburn, Craig Mitchell and Graham Munro. Lochaber AC 'B', 12th team overall was, Neil Arnott, Ken Rumgay, Niall Macbeath and Jon Gay. The ladies team place is in dispute, Dawn was not counted for LAC. Amanda Blackhall, Nicola Forster, Linda MacEwan and Biff Gow were all packed nicely within two minutes of each other. Hopefully a full report and pictures to follow, for the race and night out in Edinburgh!

Caol 10k a big turn out, on a cold wet day. Niall MacBeath took the pace on from the start, with Neil Arnott and George Cairns always chasing until the runners headed round by Lochyside. Neil Arnott took the lead and tried to build a lead, tired legs from yesterdays XCountry made this difficult and he never really got away from Niall. George Cairns had a slower start and was watching events unfold between the leaders, his strength carried him through and he was the winner by 30secs. Gregor Muir came through to take 4th place. Graham McNab took full points for V40 followed by Ken Rumgay and Ali kennedy in 10th. In the ladies race Dawn was the overall winner coming home in 9th place, Amanda was second lady and looked very confortable. Linda MacEwan was 3rd and first Lady Vet 40, would you believe it! Well done to all todays runners. a lot of new faces and lots of PB's, good to hear everyone was warming up properly before the start! Results here

Leanachan winter league race a big well done to Stuart, he managed to create a re-vamped race route, taking in some of the best tracks Leanachan has to offer. Colin left it a bit late today, and must have wondered if he was going to run out of course before he could pull in first place, trust Stuart to put in that last wee loop! A good run from Nicola Mechen to take the ladies race, carrying on from the strong form she showed last season. A good run also from Linda, fresh back from rubbing shoulders with the worlds top women XCountry runners at Edinburgh. It must have been tough for the older juniors coming back along the Witches Trail in the opposite direction to the senior race. Junior results here senior results here
