Team Strides 29th Lochaber Marathon 2012
Under SAL/BAF rules, Incorporating Scottish Veteran Harriers Club Championship
Sunday, 15th April 2012, 11am start
Registration is at the Nevis Centre, An Aird, Fort William PH33 6AN. This will be on Saturday 14th April from 2.30pm till 6pm and on Sunday 15th from 8.30am till 10.30am. Here you’ll be given your race number and race t shirt. The event is hand timed, so you must wear your number on your front and keep it visible during the race and particularly at the finish.
The course is accurately measured and considered a fast, flat route; good for securing a PB. There is a race limit of 600 entrants and last finish times are typically around 5½ to 6 hours.
Start/Finish is at Fort William Shinty Club field, adjacent to Nevis Centre car park.

How do I enter online?
admin
Hello Helen
You can enter online on the Runner’s World website.
Many thanks
Sarah
is it okay to run for your own charity, or do you have to run for one of yours?
admin
Hello Sarah
We don’t actually have any charities, it would be purely up to you if you want to run it for charity and whatever charity you want to do it for.
Many thanks

I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS MARATHON FOR ABOUT SEVEN OR EIGHT YEARS NOW CAN’T WAIT FOR APRIL

Hi,
How is the entry limit looking for this? I am hoping to enter early next month (Oct), when the funds are up! Will i be ok then? Also on the entry form it states discounted entry for scottish athletics members, my club is UKA does that count for the discounted entry?
admin
Hello
We are in the very early stages of the marathon, so people can still apply up to just before the marathon March 2012, I think we have a cut off of 600 entries. You have to be a member of Scottish Athletics, if not then you will have to pay the full amount.
Hope this helps.
thehelstonian
this sounds like a good one to do…do you receive anything for finishing?
admin
Hello
You receive a T-Shirt and a finishing Medal when you cross the line, and you will also get a roll and coffee at the end.
Many thanks
Alison
Hi
We’re thinking of doing this marathon. Do you have a course map/profile? I need convincing it actually is flat!!
Thanks
Alison
Laura
Hi, there is a map in the race information download. I can assure you it is flat.

L G
I’ve entered! Looking forward to it and spending a week around there. Just got to find a decent training plan now.
Laura
Hi Lisa
Well done on entering!! As a club lots of people follow different training plans but we have found ones like the runners world one are pretty good. Find one that suits you and try out your fuel strategy before the race.
We look forward to seeing you in April

Can you have an Ipod/MP3 when running in this marathon?
Laura
Hi Helen
You can have an iPod/mp3 in the marathon please just be aware most of the course is on road so you have to be aware of the traffic and please see the section on safety.

Hi,
The race looks very inviting but I had a couple of queries:
- how busy / fast is the traffic on the road that we are running on typically? I see from Google streetview that there isn’t much pavement and the road isn’t closed.
- why is there such a late start as this will involve running at the warmest part of the day
Thanks
Laura
Hi
Regarding the road it varies from 30-60mph. We have marshals all around the course trying to ensure your safety and slow down traffic. If you have a look at the race information document there is a section about how to run on the road.
Your second question the answer is just that’s what works for us as a club organising the race.

Hi,
Can a time from this marathon be used to qualify for Boston?
Thanks
Laura
Hi Mark
I have just had a look at the Boston Marathon site and this race complies with their requirements. At the prize giving you will beable to get a list of finishing times and that will be your proof of time. I must stress it is a very busy day for the organisers so please do not hassle them for a print out of your time straight after you have crossed the line.
Regards Lochaber AC
john
is there any way of viewing a sing-up list.
regards john
john
sorry that should be sign-up of course.
regards john
Laura
Hi John
I’m afraid thats not possible. You can see who has all entered on the day.

Craig
Hi there,
how you doing for entrant-numbers? – unsure of April plans but don’t want to leave it too late…
Cheers,
Craig
Laura
Hi Craig
We have 420 entered at the moment and that is going up daily. Our maximum is 600 and just to re-iterate since you said you didn’t want to miss out the marathon is filling up quickly.

Anyone coming up from Ayrshire area willing to car share? Thanks
fin
hi, have you many spaces left still, i am wanting to run it, but need to wait for funds!
thanx
Laura
Hi Janet
We had about 450 at the end of January so I would think about now we would have 500 out of 600 places.
Kind Regards

I am travelling up from Devon with three ladies. We have experienced some very mild warm weather, what is the weather like with you at the moment, do you have snow? Weather reports are unclear? Thank you
Laura
Hi Angie,
We have only had hill snow, the snow missed us. All the weather reports I have seen so far suggest Marathon day will be sunshine and clouds with a chance of rain Maximum 10oC
We shall see you there

Lisa Ellerbrock
Morning all,
Will there be a bag drop/storage on site at the race? Apologies if that’s listed somewhere and I just didn’t see it.
Looking forward to Sunday!
Laura
Hi Lisa,
There are lockers in the changing areas in the Nevis centre.
See you at the weekend

Was the new, ie revised course ( due to the shinty pitch being unavailable ), re-measured and given a new certificate?
All the watches beeped the first mile a good 30-45 seconds ahead of the 1 mile marker. On the way back there was definitely a lot more than 385 yards after the 26 mile marker.
My watch gave 26.44 miles, seen a few reports of very similar. At 8 min/mile speeds, this is a difference of 2 minutes which is not inconsiderable when aiming for so close to the 3:30 time.
If the course was not re-measured, then disappointing when advertised as an accurately measured course ?
Be interested to hear your thoughts.
Laura
Hi Angus,
You are correct that our marathon was longer than 26 miles 385 yards. All marathons are in fact longer than this, to take into account for any slight counting error. This year we did our best without having the shinty pitch, and took the decision to have you all finish in the car park rather than in the middle of a public road. We hope you still had a good run and enjoyed the course and we will see you next year.
Kind Regards

Hi Laura, really enjoyed myself. Excellent but the only drag was the return through the housing estate. What distance would you say the marathon was, is 26.45 as near as it gets? Many thanks to all.
Fiona
Glad someone else noticed that the race was slightly longer than expected.
however ive got to give the whole event and race a 10/10 in terms of my first marathon experience!! and will be back next year, fingers crossed!
I was so impressed with the quick registration on sunday morning, however what about keeping some small sized t shirts for us wee folk arriving on the sunday morning, or even keeping the t shirts till after the race to go with the medals?
when will the results be posted?
thanks x

It’s interesting that despite the long course, more runners from the top 30 got a PB this year than last year. According to the Power of Ten data, this year 14 runners from the top 30 got a PB and 5 didn’t (and 11 ran their first marathon), whereas last year only 7 runners got a PB but 11 didn’t. The average time this year (3:50:43) was also faster than last year (4:02:16).
Last year was quite warm, whereas this year the conditions were nearly perfect. I don’t favour long courses, but it suggests that it was actually easier to get a good time this year than last: distance isn’t everything.
Well done organising an excellent race. Perhaps next year, let us enjoy a few hundred metres less
Laura
THANK YOU
L G
Thanks for putting on a great race. I thought the course was actually very pretty and the main road didnt bother me at all, there wern’t many cars anyway. Thanks to all the marshalls and the many well positioned drinks stations and portaloo’s! Also, the venue was great and appreciated the tea and baps at the end. Would definately do it again.
